Obituary of Alethia Louisa Mitchell

Alethia Mitchell (Mendes) of Larch Street, Providence, R.I., entered eternal rest on August 11, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Providence to Fortunato Joseph Mendes and Harriet (Mendes) Broadway on August 15, 1940.  She is the widow of Richard T. Mitchell. Alethia was employed at New England Telephone and retired after more than 30 years. She graduated from East Providence High School. She was a strong believer in community, she volunteered for many years at Mt. Hope Neighborhood Association and Camp Street Ministries. She loved to read, dance, tell stories, do puzzles, and be on her iPad. She was a great cook, known for her baking, including her famous pumpkin squares. Alethia was a loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great-grandmother. She is preceded in death by her sons, James Mitchell and Richard Mitchell, and her daughter, Maria Mitchell. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Narda Mitchell-Raymond and Carol Mitchell (Jose) of Providence, one son, Robert Mitchell (Emma) of Pittsburgh, PA, and nine grandchildren (Michelle, Erica, Whitney, Isaiah, Richie, Tony, Malcolm, Shyanne, Marcus) and four great-grandchildren (Xavier, Israel, Venus, Mateo), two sisters, Maria Perry and Dorothy Shorts, both of East Providence, RI, and a host of other family and friends.

Her visitation will be held Wednesday, August 17, 2022, from 4pm - 7pm. Her funeral will be held Thursday,  August 18, 2022, at 10am in the Mount Pleasant Funeral Home, 168 Academy Avenue, Providence. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
