Obituary of Rev. Canon Frederick V. Slota

Reverend Canon Frederick V. Slota, 95, passed away peacefully at RI Hospital on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. He was the son of John and Mary (Dudek) Slota.
Born in West Warwick, he was a lifelong resident of the city. He began his education at Our Lady of Czestochowa Elementary School. He graduated from West Warwick Senior High School in 1945. He left Rhode Island to pursue his studies for priesthood at The Orchard Lake Seminary in Michigan. Then at St. Mary’s College, he received his BA degree in 1949, and in 1953 he completed his theological studies meriting a Masters in Degree from SS Cyril and Methodius Seminary at Orchard Lake. On May 30, 1953, he was ordained by Bishop Russell J McVinney DD in the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul in Providence. Following his ordination, he celebrated his first official Eucharistic Sacrifice of the mass in his home parish of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Coventry.
Reverend Father Slota’s first assignment was to St. Joseph’s in Central Falls as an Assistant Pastor from 1953 to 1961. In 1961 he accepted the duties of Assistant Pastor in St. Adalbert’s parish and became Pastor in 1970. He retired from St. Adalbert’s in 2006 after 43 years of service.
He is survived by his sister, Helen F. Gawlik, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many great and great-great-nieces and nephews. Reverend Canon Frederick V Slota was also the brother of the late Frank M, John M, and Thaddeus Slota, Sophine Furmankiewicz, and Josephine Jendzejec.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at St. Adalbert’s Church, 866 Atwells Ave, Providence, at 11 AM. Visitation will be held in the church from 9-10:30 AM prior to the mass. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to St. Adalbert’s Church, Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in Coventry, or the Diocesan Seminary Education Fund.
