Obituary of James Clanton
James E. Clanton, 93, of Providence, RI, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late William Clanton and Theresa (Jones) Clanton on February 22, 1931. At age twelve, he traveled by train with his four younger siblings to Providence, RI, to join their parents. His father served in the US Navy in Newport, RI. Jimmy, as he was affectionately called, graduated from Hope High School and excelled in track and football. Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the US Air Force during the Korean War, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. While in the Air Force, he received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He was trained as a Radio Mechanic. Upon returning home, he attended RISE vocational school, graduated, and began a 36 year career with Allen and Reed Company, becoming the General Manager. He was a member of the IBA Men’s Club, By Ki Pu Golf Club, and St. Martin De Porres Senior Center for over 25 Years. He was an avid golfer and bowler. Jimmy was loyal and devoted to those he was close to, especially his St. Martin De Porres Card Group. He enjoyed watching the Lakers, Miami Heat, and New England Patriots. He was predeceased by his Father and Mother, son Marc Clanton, sisters Daisy Harris and Elizabeth Clanton, and brother Melvin Clanton. Besides his wife, Bettye, he is survived by his sister,
Jonnie Marshall, daughter, Tracey Clanton, son, David Clanton, two nephews, Kwame Marshall and Okolo Schwinn-Clanton, one niece, Ann Allison Clanton, two stepchildren, Tracey Williams and Jon Williams, four grandchildren, Jon, Cedric, Nevaeh, and Alta. He also leaves beloved great nieces, other relatives, and friends. Jimmy was a true gentleman and will be long remembered for his kindness, compassion, and selflessness.
His visitation will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Olney Street Baptist Church, 100 Olney Street, Providence, RI, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. The burial will take place in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
